tsunami
Tsunami are waves caused by sudden movement of the ocean due to earthquakes, a shift in the under water tectonic plates, landslides on the sea floor, land slumping into the ocean, large volcanic eruptions. A tsunami is often a series of waves and the first may not be the largest.
Most Tsunami's occur near a fault line. Tsunami's often result in massive flooding along the shoreline where they hit. The force of the water depends on the size of the Tsunami and the force and volume of the water can cause significant damage to natural and man made environments. A tsunami is different from a wind generated surface wave on the ocean. A tsunami involves the movement of water from the surface to the seafloor, its speed is controlled by water depth. As the wave approaches land and reaches shallower water it slows and the deeper water behind moving faster catches up, causing the wave to bunch up and becoming much higher.
One of the most recent tsunami's was the Japanese Tsunami.Tsunami is a Japanese word 'tsu' meaning harbour and 'nami' meaning wave.

Floods
Floods are caused by heavy rain fall over a long time, or other geological / meteorological disasters, occasionally Dams burst and this can cause flooding below the dam. Floods are an over flow of water that temporarily covers land not normally covered by water. Floods develop slowly or others can be can develop quickly like Flash floods. In addition to water damage and risk of drowning, flooding can lead to additional disaster for humans as water borne diseases can develop in the flooded areas.
